Sen Majority Leader Schumer To Lead Middle East CODEL

SECURITY

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is expected to depart Washington tonight with a Congressional Delegation to Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. According to Punchbowl News, the bipartisan CODEL is understood to include Senators Lindsay Graham (R-SC), Corey Booker (D-NJ), John Thune (R-SD), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Chris Coons (D-DE), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Katie Britt (R-AL).

  • Punchbowl reports that, "Schumer says the Senate will its pass pro-Israel resolution this morning," indicating that any objections to unanimous consent have been resolved.
  • Schumer says the White House will send Congress its supplemental funding request by the end of the week. This may include USD$10b for Israel as part of a USD$100b national security package that President Biden is expected to announce this evening in a prime-time address from the Oval Office.
  • Developments today in the House Republican Party which hint that Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-NC) may be elevated to interim speaker in the coming days, with enhanced powers to bring legislation to the floor, increases the prospect that the White House request can be considered by Congress.
  • Any White House supplemental request that includes Ukraine funding will face stiff opposition from House Republicans, despite the overwhelming political will on Capitol Hill to legislate support for Israel.
