Senegal and Mauritania Eager to Supply EU with Gas

Africa needs to capitalize on Europe’s need for gas according to Mauritania's oil minister Abd Esselam Ould Mohamed Salah today.

  • "Recent prices have opened the opportunity for Mauritania, Senegal as well as other African countries to export more gas to Europe," he said. "Europe needs to diversify its supply resources, so that fantastic opportunity - we need not miss it."
  • The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim gas project covering both Mauritania and Senegal is set to start production at the end of 2023 with another smaller field set for production at some point in 2025.
  • EU officials, including those from Germany, have visited Africa recently to explore gas import options for Europe as it moves away from Russian flows.
  • Europe has explored gas import options from Israel as well as LNG imports from the US while also targeting higher domestic production, though replacing Russian volumes still looks like a tall order leading to a swathe of gas alerts across Europe in recent weeks
