Serbia, Bulgaria to Launch New Gas Link

NATURAL GAS

Serbia completed the construction of the 1.8bcm interconnector to a gas pipeline in Bulgaria, as the country aims to diversify gas supplies away from Russia, the Serbian Energy Ministry said on Sunday.

  • The launch of the interconnector was a prerequisite to start operations of a pipeline from Novi Iskar in Bulgaria to Nis in Serbia, which will allow Serbia to access gas from Azerbaijan and LNG from the Greek port of Alexandropoulos.
  • "With this interconnector we are securing alternative gas supplies, apart from the Russian gas," Serbian energy minister, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic said.
  • In mid-November, Serbia signed a deal with Azerbaijan to purchase 400 mcm/yr of natural gas from 2024.
  • Azerbaijan raised natural gas exports to Europe to 12bcm this year, from 8bcm in 2021. The country plans to further double exports to the continent by 2027, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev said.
