LNG

The US decision to start enforcing a seven-year deadline for approved LNG export projects to begin operations was made to provide clarity to overseas buyers according to Brad Crabtree from the DOE.

  • The decision aims to address a “growing backlog” of projects that were authorised for export but have not moved to construction said Crabtree.
  • ”This overhang of authorised projects that have not proceeded to export has caused confusion overseas”. He added that in conversations with the DOE, prospective buyers were unclear if projects were “real or not”.
  • DOE will no longer consider applications for extensions unless an applicant can show it has physically begun construction and has faced "extenuating circumstances" beyond its control. LNG developers may have to see their applications lapse and then reapply.
