Shadow-Fleet Oil Tanker Grounds Near Singapore

A shadow-fleet oil tanker, the Liberty, has run aground in Indonesian waters near to Singapore, carrying around 1m bbl of Venezuelan oil, according to Bloomberg.

  • The grounding is another incident near Singapore involving a tanker from the dark-fleet – tankers that help move sanctioned barrels across the globe.
  • “The Liberty flies under the flag of Cameroon, the only one designated as very high risk. Industry databases don’t provide a beneficial owner for the ship, but a firm called Skyward Management Corp, with an address in Kazakhstan, is listed as its technical manager,” Bloomberg reported.
  • The Liberty also suffered a collision earlier in the year in the Black Sea, according to data from the Global Integrated Shipping Information System database.
