Share of Coal in Poland’s Energy Mix Falls to Record Low: Forum Energii

The share of coal in Poland’s energy mix fell by 9.9 percentage points on the year in 2023 to reach a record low, while the share of renewables and gas reached 27.1% and 9.9%, respectively, according to a report by Forum Energii.

  • The share of coal in its gross electricity production in 2023 was 60.5% - which includes 39.5% of hard coal and 20.9% of brown coal.
  • Production from renewable energy sources climbed by 6.2 percentage points on the year – with a record production of 45.2TWh made by renewable sources, overtaking lignite.
  • For the first time, wind production exceeded 20TWh, reaching 23.2 TWh- a 14% share.
  • Gas production amounted to 16.5TWh – the highest in history.
  • At the end of 2023, wind capacity stood at 9.9 GW, lignite capacity stood at 8.3 GW, PV at 16.9GW, hard coal at 22GW and natural gas at 3.9GW, according to the report.
