Shipping Experts Warns Transnet Delays May See SA Ports Bypassed

  • Although Transnet infrastructure is slowly coming back online, shipping experts warn that delays caused by the cyberattack may prompt exporters & importers to bypass SA ports in favour of alternatives like Maputo (Mozambique).
    • Transnet is still yet to divulge whether the incident was ransomware or a failure of its own systems
  • Unions say that while Govt has won the latest battle on public sector wages, acceptance of the 1.5% wage offer is being described as an interim agreement and a steppingstone to future negotiations.
    • While not ideal, unions say it places them on the front foot and gives leverage for the next battle for higher wages
  • SA records 7,773 new cases of Covid-19 & 370 deaths.
    • NICD warns, however, that lower case numbers are most likely due to fewer tests (37k in the latest test period).
    • Test positivity rate is still 21.2%, which is 4x higher than the 'stable' amount - SABC
