SIC-PM To Resign Amid Police Raids & Arrests; National Address Imminent

PORTUGAL

Prime Minister António Costa is set to address the nation shortly with broadcasterSIC reporting that the PM has handed his resignation into President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. As we noted earlier in the day, the PM's offical residence as well as the Environment and Infrastructure ministries were raided by police, and his chief of staff among other senior figures arrested as part of a probe into the exploration of lithium deposits in the north of the country and a green hydrogen project in Sines.

  • Costa has served as PM since 2015, and in 2022 his centre-left Socialist Party (PS) won an overall majority in the Assembly of the Republic.
  • It is unclear if Costa's reported resignation will lead to a snap election or if the PS will continue in office with a new leader at the helm.
