Slovakia In Discussions To Transfer MiG-29s To Ukraine

SECURITY

According to Politico, Slovakian Prime Minister Eduard Heger is 'in a very intensive discussion with allies about an arrangement that could allow Bratislava to send MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine.'

  • The proposal follows the Slovakian transfer of an S-300 missile defence system to Ukraine last week- the most overtly offensive military transfer from a NATO state of the war so far.
  • A polish plan to transfer MiG-29s, via the US Rammstein air base in Germany, last month was nixed by the White House and NATO as too escalatory.
  • A new Slovak plan to transfer fighter planes is more likely to be successful as political will in Europe to provide offensive military aid has increased since reports of Russian war crimes in occupied territory came to light last week.
  • EU Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen and US President Joe Biden formally congratulated Slovakia for the transfer of the missile defence system.
