Snap Election Confirmed For 30 Sep

SLOVAKIA

The Slovakian parliament, the National Council, has voted in favour of a snap election to take place on 30 September. The confirmation of the election date comes after a sustained political crisis that saw PM Eduard Heger's gov't lose its majority in the legislature and a constitutional amendment passed to allow the National Council to vote on a snap election.

  • Opinion polling shows that the main opposition centre-left HLAS-SD and populist left-wing Smer-SD, led by former prime ministers Peter Pellegrini and Robert Fico respectively, in first and second place respectively.
  • It is not clear if the two parties would work together post election, and in any case a lengthy period of coalition formation after the snap vote looks a probable prospect.
