SNP Win By-Election, But Majority Slashed By Pro-Union Tactical Voting

SCOTLAND

The Scottish National Party has held the constituency of Airdrie and Shotts in a by-election held yesterday on 13 May. On a low turnout of just 34.3%, the SNP won 46.4% of the vote to Labour's 38.4% in second place.

  • The SNP's majority was slashed to just 8.0% in percentage terms from 13.1% previously (using numbers of votes is not useful in this situation given the abnormally low turnout).
  • The election also shows the increasing willingness of pro-Union voters to vote tactically and abandon their preferred party in order to support the most likely pro-Union party to challenge the SNP. The combined Conservative and Liberal Democrat vote fell 7.3%, with Labour's rising 6.5%. Even with this tactical voting, though, the SNP were still able to secure a comfortable win.
