Soder Seen As Best Chance For CDU To Win Chancellery: Poll

GERMANY

An opinion poll published in Der Spiegel shows that voters across the political spectrum see the CDU's best chance of retaining the chancellery following the 2021 federal election would be with Bavarian Minister-President Markus Soeder as the party's chancellor candidate. This is despite Soeder stating in August that he would not seek to succeed incumbent Angela Merkel.

  • Soeder leads the Christian Democratic Union's Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union and is seen as the best chancellor-candidate by 60.9% of CDU/CSU supporters.
  • Of the three candidates that have announced their intention to lead the CDU, among CDU supporters fiscal conservative Friederich Merz is seen as the most likely to win, with 18.6% support. Merz is seen as the candidate most likely to win for the CDU by supporters of the libertarian Free Democrats and the right-wing nationalist Alternative for Germany.
  • Other candidates Armin Laschet and Norbert Rottgen trail Soeder by a distance among supporters of all political parties.
