Soeder Concedes To Laschet, CDU Head To Lead Union Parties In Election

GERMANY

At a press conference Bavaria Minister-President and head of the centre-right Christian Social Union (CSU) Markus Soeder confirmed the news reported earlier by Bild (see 0924BST bullet) that he is withdrawing from the race to be the centre-right Union parties' chancellor candidate in the September federal election.

  • Soeder's concession comes after the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) presidium supported their party head Laschet's nomination at a lengthy virtual meeting last night.
  • The selection of Laschet over Soeder goes against all public opinion polling, which shows the latter as far more popular than the former, as well as the CDU's youth wing, which backed Soeder.
  • As mentioned earlier, the selection of the unpopular Laschet increases the prospect of the CDU being ousted from gov't in September. A centre-left 'traffic light' coalition of the Greens, Social Democrats, and Free Democrats would be the most likely replacement for the current CDU-SPD grand coalition.
