SOUTH AFRICA: Some attention being paid to a cabinet meeting in South Africa
Monday, after reports last week suggested that today South Africa's lawmakers
are coming under increased pressure after failing to make any final decisions on
a COVID-19 socio-economic plan last week.
- Measures under consideration Monday include one-off wealth taxation, asset
sales and key social relief measures and grants including extension of pension
and childcare grants in order to "ensure that more cash is put in the hand of
households".
- Last week, finance minister Mboweni managed to successfully push through an
end to further bailouts for South African Airways and also reversed a commitment
to further pay rises for South African civil servants, further evidence that he
is winning the argument in government.
- There are no clear timings for today's cabinet meeting, leaving ZAR thin and
expectedly volatile. USD/ZAR trades close to the day's lows at 18.75 at pixel.
