NATGAS: Sonatrach renews commitment to Trans-Saharan gas pipeline: Platts

NATGAS

Algeria's state-owned Sonatrach reaffirmed its commitment to the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP), which aims to transport 20-30 bcm/y of natural gas from Nigeria through Niger to Europe, Platts said.

  • A task force from Sonatrach, Nigeria's NNPC, and Niger's SONIDEP met in Algiers to discuss the project's progress.
  • The TSGP, seen as beneficial for Africa and European gas supply, will link Warri in Nigeria to Algeria's Hassi R'Mel gas hub.
  • The project, revived in 2022 with the Declaration of Niamey, has faced delays due to Nigeria's oil sector reforms.
  • However, with Europe seeking alternatives to Russian gas, the TSGP is viewed as a key opportunity to utilise Nigeria's vast gas reserves.
  • The pipeline's estimated $13 billion cost will largely benefit Niger, which has 24 Bcm of recoverable gas reserves.
  • Additionally, Nigeria is involved in the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project, which will supply gas to 13 ECOWAS countries, Morocco, and potentially Europe, further expanding its gas export capacity.
