SOUTH AFRICA: Eskom Confident on Curbing Further Blackouts

  • South Africa’s state power utility Eskom expects to avoid electricity shortages over at least the next few months, its CEO said in a presentation Monday. Another 2,500 megawatts of capacity is expected to come online by March next year and will guarantee that blackouts won’t resume, bar any exceptional circumstances, he said.
  • Two of the ANC’s GNU partners, the DA and GOOD party, have their sights set on Justice Minister Thembi Simelane over her alleged involvement in the VBS Bank scandal, News24 report. A joint News24 and Daily Maverick investigation shows that Simelane, while Polokwane mayor, used a ZAR 575,600 loan from Gundo Wealth Solutions to buy a Sandton coffee shop. Gundo brokered the municipality’s illegal investment into VBS.
  • There are no major economic releases scheduled until PPI figures for July cross on Thursday. Trade balance data is on the docket on Friday (Est: ZAR 21.5bn; Prior: ZAR 24.2bn).
