South Korea Diverts LNG Cargoes Due to High Inventories

LNG

South Korea is diverting some LNG cargoes according to Kpler due to high end of winter gas inventories.

  • Two LNG cargoes scheduled for import terminals in Korea have diverted to UK and Thailand since late March. Storage levels remain high after a mild winter and air-conditioning demand isn’t expected to increase for at least several weeks. Nuclear power generation in South Korea has risen compared with the second half of last year, and cheaper coal has reduced the demand for gas-fired power.
  • State-owned Korea Gas Corp. has no plans to resell cargoes with stockpiles being maintained at appropriate levels according to a spokeswoman.
  • Inventories at the end of March are estimated at the highest level seasonally since at least 2019 at 4.3m tons according to Bloomberg.
