SOUTH KOREA: Kishida, Moon Hold First Call-Kyodo

Japan's Kyodo News reporting that newly-installed Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has held his first direct conversation with South Korean President Moon Jae-in. The call comes after days of speculation in both countries over how long it has taken for the two men to hold talks, given the importance of the Japanese-South Korean political and economic relationship in the Indo-Pacific.

  • Relations between the two nations remain frosty over issues related to the Second World War. In the run-up to the end-month general election, Japan's Kishida is unlikely to be want to be seen becoming too close to the Korean leader given the nationalistic elements within his Liberal Democratic Party.
