NATURAL GAS

Spain does not support the voluntary target announced on Wednesday by the EU Commission for member states to target a reduction in gas use of 15% from August to March, compared with their average consumption in the same period during 2016-2021.

  • "I deeply regret to say that Spain does not support this proposal," Spanish Energy Minister Teresa Ribera said on the matter. "We consider that it is proposed without prior orientation, without a general debate in the European Council, even when the economic consequences are particularly important. They cannot demand a sacrifice of which they have not even asked our prior opinion."
  • Spain is not reliant on Russian gas unlike most EU nations given its ability to source gas supplies from north Africa and via its LNG import terminals.
