Speaker Confirms Thursday Vote On Sending PM To Standards Commissioner

Wires and social media reporting that Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle has confirmed that he will allow a debate to take place on an opposition motion regarding PM Boris Johnson's statements to the House regarding 'partygate'. This will be followed by a vote on whether to submit the case to the parliamentary standards commissioner.

  • Given the sizeable majority held by PM Johnson's Conservatives, there is little prospect that the motion will be approved.
  • However, the size of the Conservative vote going against Johnson or abstaining could prove a useful indication of the prime minister's support level in the midst of the 'partygate' scandal and ahead of the 5 May local elections in England.
