Speculation Rife Ahead Of Cabinet & LDP Execs Reshuffle, Party & General Elections

JAPAN

Reports circulated by Mainichi and Jiji suggest that PM Suga wants to dissolve the House of Representatives in mid-September after reshuffling his Cabinet and party executives. Under this scenario, the general election would take place on October 17. Suga also considers holding the LDP leadership race, currently slated for September 29, after the general election.

  • Suga may announce Cabinet and party leadership shake-up early next week, possibly as soon as on Monday. The Nikkei reported that the Premier is set to replace Hakubun Shimomura as LDP policy chief. The news follow earlier reports noting that the party's influential Secretary General Nikai will be replaced.
  • Shimomura had earlier expressed interest in running for party leadership, but pulled out of the race on Monday, citing the need to "concentrate on [his] current responsibilities" as LDP policy chief. Jiji sources suggested that Suga pressured Shimomura to quit the race if he wants to keep his party post.
