Srettha Expected To Be Named PM This Week As PTP-Led Bloc Expands

THAILAND

The Pheu Thai Party (PTP) said that it now has the support of 314 MPs from 11 parties in the lower house and announced that the pro-military Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) have decided to join the bloc. Meanwhile, the party confirmed that Srettha Thavisin remains its candidate for Prime Minister.

  • The inclusion of pro-junta PPRP and UTN in the coalition raises the odds of a conclusive PM vote tomorrow. The support of pro-military parties will help the PTP secure enough votes from junta-appointed Senators.
  • Although some upper house members remain sceptical, Senator Wanchai Sornsiri said that he expects at least 190 out of 250 Senators to vote for Srettha, following the inclusion of pro-military parties in the PTP-led coalition.
  • While this outcome means that the pro-military, royalist establishment will retain much influence on Thai politics, the formation of a new government will bring some reprieve to Thai markets after three months of political uncertainty.
