- Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in Mexico to accompany US President Joe Biden at the North American Leaders' Summit taking place today and tomorrow.
- Blinken will hold a trilateral meeting with Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard and Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly and “participate in the signing of a North American Declaration on Partnership for Equity and Racial Justice.”
- Trade is expected to be a primary focus of the summit with Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to push Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on moderating one of his flagship policies, “energy sovereignty,” which Washington and Ottawa claim violates the principles of the USMCA agreement.
- Trudeau told Reuters yesterday that he expected progress on the trade dispute: "Both President Biden and I are going to be... fairly clear with President Lopez Obrador that this... needs to be understood as a way to help Mexico develop, a way to continue to draw in investments from companies in Canada and the United States.”
