State Of Emergency In Lima Remains In Place

  • Peru continues to see some of its worst violence in decades, as protesters who oppose the current government call for political change in the country.
  • Over the weekend, the government of Peru extended its 30-day state of emergency in the capital Lima, and the regions of Cusco, Puno and the constitutional province of Callao. The state of emergency suspends several constitutional rights such as freedom of movement and assembly as well as authorizing the military to back up police actions to restore public order.
  • Lima was braced for a new rally against President Dina Boluarte this week as thousands of demonstrators mobilized Monday towards the capital following the weeks of social unrest that has seen the death toll increase to nearly 50.
  • Defence Minister Jorge Chavez Cresta on Monday reiterated his call for peace and for establishing dialogue mechanisms with demonstrators in different regions across the country.
