Ramaphosa Engages with Political Leaders as Violence Continues

  • Ramaphosa conducted meeting with opposition party leaders this morning. DA's Steenhuisen called for more troops with only 2,500 of the 70,000 available deployed.
  • Source close to the meeting between political parties and Ramaphosa says the announcement of a state of emergency was ruled out today and deemed not "ideal" by other political party leaders
  • Some members of the meeting said Zuma should be released, while Ramaphosa said this was impossible
  • Economists conveying major concerns about food, water, power and fuel insecurity with ports and roads being shut down due to the violence and some shaving as much as 0.4% off 2021 GDP as a result
