Strike Action Swirling, With General Strike Possible by End-August

  • The Public Servants Association union are to ballot members for strike action that could impact schools, hospitals and government departments with its 1.3mln members. Elsewhere, markets await any further announcement from the Congress of SA Trade Unions – the largest in the country – for plans over a general strike as soon as August 24th to protest against the cost of living.
  • News24 write that the Phala Phala probe into potential breaches of FX holdings rules by President Ramaphosa is ‘dead in the water’ as the intelligence watchdog leading the investigation has not found a boss to oversee proceedings.
  • IoL report on Central Energy Fund data showing South Africa are set for a material decline in the price of petrol in September, with 95 unleaded petrol expected to drop by around R2.60 per litre, while 93 unleaded might go down by R2.45 per litre.
  • News24 and Fin24 write on polling data released earlier this week that showed the ANC garnering less than 50% of the vote, writing that while the polls paint a grim picture of ANC support, such polling should be taken with a grain of salt – although do add further pressure on Ramaphosa to turn around his ailing party.
