Strong gains in CLP, HUF and ZAR, While Political Tensions Keep Weighing on TRY

  • CLP was the best performing currency this week amid strong copper exports; the peso is up 2.8% against the US Dollar since the start of the week.
  • CEE currencies have also been consolidating higher following the strong depreciation in Q4 2021; HUF is the best performing currency of the region, up 2.5% against the USD and 2.8% against the Euro.
  • Risk-on ZAR has also been trending higher despite the little rise in price volatility (VIX trading at around 20); the rand is up 2.1% against the greenback.
  • On the other hand, political uncertainty has been weighing on the TRY; the lira is down 3.7% against the dollar since Monday.
