Suga Expected To Maintain Abe's Cabinet Largely Intact: Japan Today

JAPAN PRESS

The newly-installed leader of Japan's governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Yoshihide Suga is set to maintain outgoing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Cabinet of ministers largely intact according to Japan Today.

  • Suga won the LDP leadership election on Monday by a comfortable margin, and is set to be officially designated as prime minister by the Diet tomorrow.
  • Japan Today reports that key ministers under Abe, such as Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Finance Minister Taro Aso are set to be retained as part of Suga's new administration. Observers have noted one of the primary reasons for the election of Suga as LDP leader was his offer of continuity from the Abe gov't.
  • One senior minister set for a change of office appears to be Defence Minister Taro Kono, who reportedly will receive the Internal Affairs and Communications brief. Kono will be replaced at the defence ministry by Nobuo Kishi, the brother of Shinzo Abe who was adopted by his maternal aunt and uncle shortly after birth.
  • Within the LDP, former education minister Hakubun Shimomura becomes the party's new policy chief, with Toshihiro Nikai retained as party secretary general.
