Sunak Campaign Gains Momentum w/Raab, Shapps Endorsements

UK

Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak's campaign to lead the Conservative party and become the next UK PM has gained extra momentum this morning with the official launch of his campaign coming alongside the endorsement of Justice Secretary and Deputy PM Dominic Raab, as well as Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, who has suspended his own campaign for the leadership.

  • Earlier, hard-line Brexiteers and loyalists to outgoing PM Boris Johnson, Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries and Minister for Brexit Opportunities and Gov't Efficiency Jacob Rees-Mogg both announced their backing of Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.
  • Betting markets have Sunak as favourite to become the next leader, with a 37% implied probability of becoming leader on Smarkets, ahead of second-placed Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt on 27%. Mordaunt received a boost yesterday when a Conservative Home poll of Conservative members had her as the favourite among the grassroots.
