Sunak Rules Out May 2 General Election

UK

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has ruled out the possibility of a general election on May 2, the same day as local elections.

  • Sunak said, in an interview with ITV, that the May 2 local elections are, "important elections, that's what I'm focused on. There won't be a general election that day but when there is a general election what matters is the choice."
  • An early general election has long been seen as unlikely considering the wide polling gap between Sunak's ruling Conservative Party and the opposition Labour Party.
  • Betting markets continue to view Q4 2024 as the most likely time for a general election with data from Smarkets showing an implied probability of 74% of a Q4 general election.
