Sununu Considers White House Bid As "Campaign Season" Draws Near

US

The Washington Post has published a useful graphic identifying the timings of previous presidential campaign launches.

  • According to the graphic, the bulk of campaign launches are expected to come mid-March to early June. In 2020 the median announcement came on March 14. In 2016 and 2012 the median announcement came June 4 and 6, respectively.
  • Moderate New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu (R-NH) may be the next candidate to declare as he continues to make overtures suggesting a White House run may be in the works.
  • According to the New York Times, Sununu believes he may have a path to the Oval Office on what he calls the “normal” lane.
  • NYT: “For now, his pre-candidacy — his role as a national player at all — represents an early experiment for the party, a real-time barometer for abortion politics, Republican media strategy and the durability of what he sees as a dead-end Trumpian campaign mentality in general elections. ‘I’m conservative, I’m just not an extremist,’ Mr. Sununu said.”
