Supply Risks Drive Crude Curve Backwardation

Brent time spreads maintain strength on supply risks.

  • Brent Dec-22 Dec23 has rallied from 5.78$/bbl on Aug 17 up to current levels around 10.8$/bbl as curve backwardation has steepened.
  • The Brent Oct-Nov spread has settled down slightly today after spiking higher late last week and ahead of the October contract expiry on Wednesday.
  • The WTI-Brent front month spread is also holding steady today after widening out as far as -7.95$/bbl late last week.
    • Brent OCT 22 up 0.3% at 101.28$/bbl
    • WTI OCT 22 up 0.5% at 93.5$/bbl
    • WTI-Brent up 0.03$/bbl at -7.77$/bbl
    • Brent OCT 22-NOV 22 down -0.22$/bbl at 1.76$/bbl
    • Brent NOV 22-DEC 22 up 0.04$/bbl at 1.7$/bbl
    • Brent DEC 22-DEC 23 up 0.34$/bbl at 10.76$/bbl
