Supreme Court Decision On Abortion May Come Today

US

The Supreme Court is holding an opinion day today which may provide a ruling on Dobbs vs Jackson, the Mississippi abortion case from which a ruling from Justice Samuel Alito is expected to roll back the constitutional right to an abortion provided by Roe vs Wade.

  • There are 18 outstanding SCOTUS cases to be ruled upon with a two-week session remaining before the summer recess.
  • Opinions will be released from 10:00 ET 15:00 BST in order of seniority. If a ruling is released from a more senior justice than Alito then it will be evident that a ruling on Dobbs will not come today. The next opinion day will take place on Thursday.
  • The ruling on Dobbs is likely to have a significant impact on the midterm elections in November. At present the extent of the political impact of the SCOTUS ruling has been mitigated by the primacy of inflation, but as the midterms draw closer it is likely that Democrat campaigns in tossup seats will highlight abortion and attempt to target women's votes.
