Supreme Court Ruling On Abortion Expected Today Or Tomorrow

US

The Supreme Court has another opinion day today as the wait continues for a ruling in the case Dobbs vs Jackson’s Women’s Health – the Mississippi abortion case on which a ruling from Justice Samuel Alito is expected to end the constitutional right to an abortion established by Roe Vs Wade.

  • SCOTUS Blog writes: “Today at SCOTUS: More opinions. 13 cases are left to be decided this term, including the big ones on abortion, guns, and the power of the EPA. Starting at [10:00 ET 15:00 BST].”
  • An additional opinion day has been added for tomorrow to clear the backlog of cases before the summer recess, so it is likely that a ruling on Dobbs will come this week even if it doesn't come today.
  • Justice Alito's leaked ruling appeared set to transform November's midterms into a proxy referendum on abortion, however, inflation and the threat of recession has pushed that debate to the side in recent months. If a ruling comes this week, and it hasn't been substantively altered from the leaked draft ruling, it could reignite debates on abortion and is certain play a significant role in Democrat midterm strategy, even if that role has been diminished by the primacy of the economy.
  • The White House may also be expecting a ruling on Dobbs today. Vice President Harris will hold a meeting with State Attorneys General at 12:45 ET 17:45 BST "to discuss their efforts protecting reproductive health care access."
  • That event can be followed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtJtrKox_1o
