Surprisingly Strong Re-Acceleration In AHE Growth

  • AHE was clearly stronger than expected in April, accelerating to 0.48% M/M (cons 0.3) after two months averaging 0.27%, for its strongest monthly pace since Mar’22.
  • Analysts had indicated a skew towards a hawkish surprise but the extent of the surprise was notable, exceeding the strongest amongst primary dealers of UBS at 0.45% M/M.
  • The sizeable non-supervisory sub-category saw a smaller but still noteworthy acceleration from a higher starting point, to 0.39% M/M after 0.35% M/M in both March and its monthly average through Q1.
  • This non-supervisory measure is an important category for underlying wage growth trends, having better shown the relative stickiness of private wages & salaries from the Q1 ECI data, having increased 4.6% annualized vs the latter’s 4.9%.
