Surveillance Planes Shifted From Germany To Romania To Boost Russia Recon

NATO has announced that it is shifting a number of its Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) surveillance planes from a base in Aachen in western Germany to the Otopeni airbase outside of the Romanian capital Bucharest. The planes will arrive from 17 Jan and according to aNATO statement will "...support the alliance's reinforced presence in the region and monitor Russian military activity".

  • The planes will fly over only NATO territories but are able to detect Russian aircraft hundreds of miles away. Recon on Russian aircraft (and crucially Russian-controlled drones) could provide crucial intel advantage to Kyiv ahead of any potential spring offensive.
