POWER: Swiss Hydro Stocks Fall Below Ten-Year Minimum

Swiss hydropower reserves last week – calendar week 8 – declined by 3.8 percentage points to 20.3% of capacity, falling below the ten-year minimum, BFE data showed. 

  • Stocks declined by 4.8 points the week prior.
  • The deficit to the five-year average widened to 18.3 points last week, from 17.5 points the week prior.
  • Stocks also widened the deficit to the 10-year average to 13.6 points, from 12.9 points the week before.
  • The L'Ecreuleuse measuring point saw 3cm of new snowfall in the last seven days with current snow height at 243cm on 25 February, White Risk data showed.
  • There was almost no precipitation in the hydro-intensive region of Sion, canton Valais, last week, hindering inflows into reserves.
  • The latest Bloomberg ECMWF weather forecast for Sion suggested precipitation to total 8.9mm this week, well below the seasonal average of 29.5mm.
  • Mean temperatures in Zurich this week are forecast at 1C to 7.7C this week, with temperatures above normal through 27 February, before falling below the average.
  • The latest Swiss hydro balance is forecast to end this week at -4.02TWh. The balance is seen to further narrow to -4.64TWh on 12 March.
