Swiss Hydro Stocks Slow Rise

Swiss hydropower stocks last week (week 28) slowed their increase, rising by 4.6 percentage points compared to 8.3 percentage points the week prior, to end at 75.9% of capacity, BFE data showed.

  • The surplus to the five-year average widened to 8.7 points, from 8 points the week before.
  • And the surplus to the long-term average – since 1997 – widened to 10.3 points, up from 9.9 points the week prior and a new yearly high.
  • Average Swiss power demand last week was at 6.54GW – up by around 400MW from the previous week.
  • Reservoir levels grew at the fastest pace in canton Valais for the second consecutive week, up by 7.2 points, followed by Graubunden which climbed by 2.8 points on the week.
  • Average hydropower generation in Switzerland from water reservoir sources last week was at 2.74GW compared to 1.95GW in week 27.
  • Nuclear generation in Switzerland remained stable on the week at 2.88GW.
  • Forecasts suggested precipitation in Sion – in the hydro-intensive canton of Valais – will be below the seasonal normal this week of around 6.5mm and will remain below until 26 July, latest ECMWF forecast show.
