Swiss Hydro Stocks Switch to Deficit to 5-Year Norm

Swiss hydropower reserves last week fell by 0.7 percentage points to 86% of capacity as of 9 October, switching back to a deficit to the five-year average, BFE data show.

  • Hydro stocks in Switzerland typically peak around September/October.
  • Hydropower stocks switched to a deficit of 0.4 percentage points to the five-year average last week, compared with a surplus of 0.6 points the week earlier.
  • Stocks also switched to a deficit to the long-term average since 1997 last week of 0.3 points, compared with a surplus of 0.2 points the week before.
  • Reserves declined at the fastest pace in the canton of Graubunden – where around 25% of the country’s hydro stocks are located – by 1.1 points to 88.2% of capacity.
  • Hydropower output declined week on week, while nuclear output also edged lower. Production from hydro reservoirs declined by 495MW on the week to 1.33GW. Nuclear output edged down by 79MW to 2.89GW, Entso-E data showed.
  • Forecasts in Sion suggest wetter weather from this weekend, but drier weather at the start of the week could limit inflows into reserves.
