Swiss Hydro Stocks Widen Deficit to Average

Swiss hydropower reserves last week slowed down the weekly increase to 0.9 percentage points to 76.4% of capacity, or 6,805GWh, as of 14 August, while stock levels widened the deficit to the long-term and five-year averages, BFE data show.

  • Stocks slowed the weekly increase to 0.9 percentage points from 3.3 percentage points a week earlier.
  • The deficit to the long-term average – since 1997 – widened to 4.3 percentage points, compared with 2.2 percentage points the week before. Stock levels stood at a deficit to the average for the third consecutive week.
  • Hydropower reserve levels also widened the deficit to the five-year average to 3.2 percentage points, compared with a deficit of 1.1 percentage points a week prior.
  • The largest regional increase was seen in the canton of Valais of 54GWh, where 45% of the country’s stocks are located.
  • Strong precipitation in Sion, canton Valais, at the beginning of this week could support some inflows into reserves. But forecasts suggest minimal precipitation for the remainder of this week, limiting inflows according to Bloomberg’s ECMWF forecast.
