Tensions Brewing Over ANC's Stance On Phala Phala, Eskom Ramps Up Load Shedding

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Local media outlets report that a group of ANC lawmakers are considering rebelling against the instruction to reject the Section 89 report which found that there were grounds for launching an impeachment case against President Ramaphosa. News24 noted that suspended ANC MP Mervyn Dirks is lobbying colleagues to vote with the opposition, while one source from the ANC's NEC told IOL that in their perception party leaders "strong-armed" the Executive Committee into the decision to defend the President. Ramaphosa made no references to the Phala Phala scandal during his address at the opening session of the World Science Forum last night.
  • Eskom announced that Stage 4 load-shedding would be implemented from 9am today until further notice amid continued breakdowns of generating units. The move upends the efforts by the beleaguered utility to outline a clear schedule of its rolling blackouts. Energy supply is expected to be further disrupted by taking Koeberg Unit 1 offline for maintenance from Thursday, which will pull some 920MW of power from the grid for about six months.
  • Circling back to politics, a Daily Maverick piece notes that a group of ANC members have lodged a formal complaint over the nomination process for the National Executive Committee (NEC) ahead of next week's elective conference.
