Tensions Increase Between Ukraine And Belarus Over Missile Incident

Reuters has reported that the Secretary of Belarus Security Council has said it is "unlikely downed Ukrainian rocket entered our airspace by accident, probably there was some intention."

  • The comments come after Belarus yesterday downplayed the severity of the incident in which a reported Ukrainian s-300 air defence missile landed in Belarussian territory.
  • Belarus Military commissar Oleg Konovalov, said yesterday that local residents had "absolutely nothing to worry about. Unfortunately, these things happen," and compared the incident to one in November when a stray Ukrainian missile landed in Poland.
  • Belarus has struck a less conciliatory tone today with President Alexander Lukashenko delaying a statement on the incident and summoning the Ukrainian ambassador to the foreign ministry in Minsk to receive a formal protest.
