UK: The gov't was defeated in the Commons late Tues, by 328 to 301, putting
control of the Commons into the hands of the opposition & Tory rebels on Weds.
They will aim to pass a Bill to seek an A50 extension & remove the threat of a
no deal Brexit on Oct 31. It is reasonable to assume that the Bill will pass the
Commons, before moving into the Lords, where it will face different challenges.
PM Johnson said Parliament is on the brink of "wrecking any deal we might get
with Brussels. This Bill will hand control of Brexit to the EU. I refuse to go
along with that plan. I don't want an election but if the House votes the public
will have to choose who goes to Brussels on Oct 17," tabling a motion to trigger
a snap election under the FTPA. If 2/3 support the gov't, an election will be
called. If not, gov't will be forced to ask for an Art. 50 extension to Jan 31
unless a Brexit deal is struck with the EU by Oct 19. Labour leader Corbyn has
noted that the party will support the call for an election once the no deal bill
was in place. Some of the 21 Tory rebels confirmed Tuesday the whip had already
been removed, dismissing them from the Parliamentary Party, but Andrea Leadsom
has suggested that they may gain a reprieve if they change their minds tomorrow.
