GERMANY
GERMANY: The junior partner in Chancellor Angela Merkel's governing coalition,
the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), will announce the winners of its
leadership election on Saturday.
- The outcome will have significant implications for the future of the federal
coalition, with the two sets of candidates for the leadership having very
different views on the continuation of the government.
- Like the Greens, the SPD will have a male-female co-leaders system.
- The 2 sets of candidates are FinMin and Dep. Chancellor Olaf Scholz with
former Brandenburg MP Klara Geywitz, and former North Rhine-Westphalia FinMin
Norbert Walter-Borjans with Bundestag member Saskia Esken.
- The Scholz-Geywitz pairing is viewed as the continuity option, favouring the
continuation of the SPD's coalition with Merkel's centre-right CDU.
- The Walter-Borjans-Esken team on the other hand has been critical of the
coalition, but have not yet advocated is dissolution.
- As well as approving the new leaders, party delegates will vote at party
conference (6-8 Dec) on whether to continue in coalition with Merkel's CDU.
