MEXICAN PESO: The MXN has been the notable gainer in early FX dealing this week
on the back of positive headlines surrounding NAFTA from over the weekend. The
WSJ reported that "the U.S. & Mexico are getting close to reaching a bilateral
agreement on key issues re NAFTA (according to sources). Trump admin officials &
their Mexican counterparts are debating a proposal to exempt some industries
from dispute-settlement provisions, which would remove one of the most difficult
issues, the people said." Elsewhere BBG reported that Mexico & the U.S. are said
to have made breakthroughs on matters concerning the auto and energy industries.
Mexico's incoming NAFTA negotiator Seade confirmed that the energy issues have
now been resolved, although the county's economy minister Guajardo has noted
that the country still cannot declare a victory in the bilateral NAFTA talks.
- The currency will also be garnering further support from a weekend tweet from
President Trump which noted that "our relationship with Mexico is getting closer
by the hour. Some really good people within both the new and old government, and
all working closely together....A big Trade Agreement with Mexico could be
happening soon!"
