The Netherlands Plan to End All Russian LNG Imports

LNG

The Dutch government plans to end all Russian LNG imports according to Energy Minister Rob Jetten.

  • The country has stopped signing new LNG contracts from Russia and is working on winding down existing contracts with the plans to apply to both spot and long term contract supplies. The Netherlands imported about 15% of its total supplies from Russia in Jan to April according to Bloomberg ship tracking data.
  • European Union’s energy commissioner Kadri Simson has previously said companies shouldn’t renew long-term contracts with Russia after expiry. Spain has asked companies not to sign new purchases.
  • There are currently no sanctions imposed on LNG imports from Russia with Belgium, Spain, and France key buyers and only the Baltic states and the UK implementing a ban on Russian LNG imports.
  • EU is investigating a way for member states to have the option to effectively ban Russian shipments of LNG without implementing new energy sanctions.
