Three Popular Renewal Reps Withdraw From Bloc

PERU

Overnight, three members of Congress from the right-wing conservative Popular Renewal party withdrew from the bloc, citing disagreements with the party line set out by spokesman Jorge Montoya several days ago.

  • The three members, Norma Yarrow Lumbreras , María Córdova Lobatón and Diego Bazán Calderón, have joined the centre-right liberal Avanza Pais (Go On Country) led by former President of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces of Peru, José Williams Zapata.
  • In July, another Popular Renewal member left the party, disagreeing with the leadership's continued refusal to recognise the victory of leftist Pedro Castillo in the country's presidential election.
  • The shift of the three representatives does not affect the parliamentary arithmetic, with both Popular Renewal and Avanza Pais sitting in opposition to the Castillo gov't, which sits as a minority in Congress.
