UK: To recap, the Letwin amendment (amendment A) passed through the Commons late
Monday, by 329 votes to 302. The cross-party amendment allows MPs to take
control of the parliamentary agenda on Wednesday. This will result in MPs
putting forward business motions relating to Brexit, including indicative votes
on alternatives to PM May's deal. The government had ordered its MPs to vote
against the amendment, with several junior level ministers resigning to vote for
the amendment. The PM had already noted that that the government would not
commit to delivering the outcome of the votes but would "engage constructively"
with MPs. The BBC has noted that "indicative votes will now be held on Wednesday
on various Brexit options, in addition to Theresa May's deal, which could
include: revoking Article 50 and cancelling Brexit, another referendum, the PM's
deal plus a customs union, the PM's deal plus both a customs union and single
market access, a Canada-style free trade agreement and leaving the EU without a
deal." BBC political correspondent Chris Mason points out that "it's possible
there'll be either a) no consensus for any one option or b) a majority in favour
of an option that either the government or the EU find unacceptable."
