Top Iran Advisor Calls For Rapprochement With Saudi Arabia

Ali Akbar Velayati, a top advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has called for a reopening of embassies as a first step towards rapprochement between the regional adversaries.

  • Velayati said: "We are neighbours of Saudi Arabia and we must coexist. The embassies of the two countries should reopen in order to solve our problems in a better way."
  • Iran has long desired to extract the Saudis from their alliance with Israel and the United States and Tehran may view the recent deterioration of relations between Saudi Arabia and the United States as signaling a shift in regional geopolitics.
