Transnet Strikes Could Hamper International Trade

  • More strike action is set for South Africa, with Transnet workers affiliated with two unions set to strike from tomorrow onwards. The strike action could impact both freight rail services as well as port activity. Transnet has submitted a revised wage offer to unions, but no resolution has yet been reached.
  • Late yesterday, Eskom announced that load shedding will be pushed to stage 4 from 6pm Tuesday until further notice due to generation units at the Kendal and Lethabo power stations tripping. CEO de Ruyter has said power cuts should start to ease within the next 10 days as large generation units are due to come back online.
  • News24 writes of the triple whammy hitting Johannesburg, with a water crisis, rolling load-shedding and missing leadership hitting the economic hub.
  • PMI data takes focus going forward, with September composite seen dropping to 49.9 from 51.7 prior. Data is due at 0815BST/0315ET.
